The
Australian Homestay Housing a Muslim Student
Dear Student
There is an ever increasing number of Muslim students going overseas for their studies. Living in a homestay is one form of accommodation available. Australian Hosts have a general understanding of the Muslim culture. The Host who will accepts a Muslim student will do so under the following conditions :
1. The Host family will not have a dog
2. The Host family accepts that if you are over 18 years, you are entitled to come and go from the homestay as you wish, under the consideration for example, if coming home late, entering the home quietly.
3. The Host family are not servants nor will they have servants. For example, you are expected to make your own breakfast and lunch from what is provided by the host in the home.
5. The host family understands that prayer time for you is very important and it is expected that you the student will pray in the homestay.
If your are praying loudly it is acceptable for them to ask you to pray quietly as a sign of respect.
6. There is no pork or ham in the home
7.
There is no alcohol as a drink or as a part of
the food preparation.
8. Halal meat is available in Australia. Most hosts can access Halal meat from local butchers but sometimes this can be difficult. The host needs to be trusted to provide food which is not ham or pork.
9. Men and woman are equal in Australia.
10. The basis of the Student / Homestay relationship is Respect and Trust.
