Homestay

Homestay can be a valuable part of the learning process for applicants involved in an Internship program.  Through daily interaction with their homestay, applicants can improve their English at an accelerated rate in comparison to residing in shared accommodation.

Insurance

All applicants are covered by Public Liability Insurance provided by Homestay Australia or applicants are covered by their University.

Applicants who are covered through arrangements made by Homestay Australia can expect to pay approximately $100.00 to $250.00 for their Insurance cover. The longer the period in Internship, the higher the cost of Insurance.

Visa

Student visa holders are only eligible to do an internship in the period covered by their visa. Most student visas have an extra 4 weeks at the end of their visa after their study is due to finish.

Full-time internships can only occur during this time. Part-time internships (maximum 20 hours per week) are also possible on a student visa.

Visitor visa holders are only able to do an internship for a maximum period of 3 months. The holder is entitled to work in an unpaid position as long as the job is not usually a paid position.

This means that the internship is usually in a not-for profit organisation and in most instances the applicant simply observes the role.

Working Holiday visas are for 12 months. The holder can work (paid or unpaid) for any one employer for a maximum of 3 months. It is also possible to study for a maximum of 3 months on this visa.

For further information about visas, visit the DIMIA website: www.immi.gov.au
